What is Vascular Dementia

By : on : August 28, 2020 comments : (Comments Off on What is Vascular Dementia)

  • Dementia is not a specific disease, but it is a condition. Dementia is an “umbrella term” meaning a lot of symptoms and diseases fall under it.

  • For this video, I’d like to discuss vascular dementia.

  • Generally, people suffering from vascular dementia have the typical problems associated with dementia like problems with reasoning, planning, judgement, memory and other thought processing.

  • Vascular dementia is generally caused by poor blood flow to the brain. This could be the result of many things. Vascular dementia occurs when oxygen and vital nutrients are severely restricted from getting to the brain.

  • People at risk for this type of dementia typically have heart disease, high risk for stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and smokers.  Anyone with a history of a heart attack is also at increased risk.

  • Vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease can often occur together. A heart healthy lifestyle can help reduce your risks.
